Tax advice: TikTok or professional expert help
20 May 2026
These days you can do everything on TikTok: learn how to cook, watch cat videos, practice some dance moves and even get some tax advice.
While TikTok may be great for entertainment, it is not the place to get tax advice, as this should instead be done by a tax expert.
HMRC have released a new tax advice register to ensure you get just that – trusted advice from a trusted tax adviser, instead of getting your tax advice from a dancing app.
What changes have been made to tax advice?
On Monday 18 May 2026, HRMC rolled out a new registration requirement for tax advisers who are paid to interact with HMRC on behalf of clients.
This change is inspiring a fairer market for taxpayers and advisers who already practice ethically, and registration is done via one digital system.
It is expected that all advisers will be registered by 31 March 2027.
Who should I trust for my tax advice?
Being on the register will serve as a certification that the advice being given is legitimate.
This should help you to trust what you are told and help you feel confident that you are paying the correct amount of tax.
There will be a regulated paper trail that follows any tax decisions that are made.
It is becoming best practice to ensure that you are receiving tax advice from a registered professional, rather than an internet star.
What is tax best practice?
Receiving good advice from a friend is nice, but receiving good advice from your tax adviser is a must.
As well as keeping you compliant with the latest tax rules, good tax advice can ensure you only pay what you need by keeping the tax exposure under control.
It can also be handy in staying ahead of deadlines and being mindful of changing thresholds that may increase your obligations.
Bad tax advice can lead to HMRC penalties fines and potentially even legal action.
Tax is something that can go extremely wrong, so we can help you get it right.
Trust us to be better than TikTok and give you expert advice on your tax exposure and provide support based on your unique circumstances.
