Partners & Staff

All the partners deal with a full range of client needs including auditing, accountancy, management and computer services, personal and corporate taxation advice and planning, trust and executorships work, and raising finance.

Partners

John Murtland FCA

John became a partner of the firm in the 1970’s and became senior partner of the firm in 1984. John’s experience ranges from the provision of advice to private companies to the administration of trusts and estates. In addition he has extensive knowledge of corporate, personal and capital taxes.

The majority of his client portfolio is now composed of private clients and high net worth individuals together with their related Trust arrangements.

John is a keen golfer and member of the Moortown Golf Club where he was treasurer for 18 years. He is also an active supporter of both Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Bill Jenkinson FCA

Bill joined the practice in the 1980’s. He deals with a large portfolio of personal and business clients covering a number of sectors including Telecommunications, Leisure, Solicitors and Agriculture.

Bill is a keen angler, tennis player and has played cricket for Penguins Cricket Club since the 1970’s.

Stuart Adam FCA

Stuart decided that during his A Levels he wanted to become a Chartered Accountant and went on to join one of the top ten accounting firms where he qualified in 1986. Stuart joined Thomas Coombs in 1998 and became a partner in 1999. Stuart has varied portfolio of clients mainly owner-managed, family run businesses in the SME sector. Stuart uses his 24 years of experience to provide business advice (including attendance at Board meetings), treasury management, financial controls and tax planning support to his clients.

Stuart is a life-long Leeds United fan and also follows Formula 1 (as a spectator). Stuart’s ambitions are to follow the Formula1 season in each country live and to consistently hit a golf ball straight.

Christopher Darwin FCA

Chris joined the practice as a graduate recruit in 1992 and since then has progressed through the ranks of the firm eventually becoming a partner in 2001. Building on his farming family business roots he now maintains a broad and growing client portfolio of family and owner managed businesses. In addition Chris heads our rapidly expanding specialist Charities department which services charities, social enterprises and other not-for-profit organisations.

In his spare time Chris supports Barnsley F.C. and looks forward to their eventual return to the Premiership, as well as following the fortunes of McLaren in Formula 1.

Senior Staff

Joyce Liddle FCA CTA – Senior Tax Manager

Joyce, head of our trust and tax department, is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser. Joyce joined Thomas Coombs in 1992 from a national firm and has specialised in the taxation of owner managed businesses for over twenty years. Joyce deals with all aspects of business, personal and trust taxation, including VAT, national insurance and inheritance tax.

Daniel Sowden ACA – Senior Audit Manager

Daniel has recently joined Thomas Coombs following a move from a national firm.  He brings with him over ten years of audit and accounting experience, predominantly in the owner managed business sector, ranging across a diverse spectrum of industries.  Daniel also specialises in professional practices and the audit of records under the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules.

Outside of work Daniel enjoys walking and mountaineering and regularly visits the Lake District and Scotland.  He is also a keen, but very amateur, golfer.

Louise Phillips FCCA – Manager

Louise began her career with Thomas Coombs in 1998 as an Accounts Technician and qualified as a Certified Accountant in 2003. Louise specialises in accounts preparation and audits across a wide spectrum of enterprises with turnover levels ranging from £10,000 for the small entrepreneur to £16 million for large PLC organisations. Included within this spectrum of enterprises are a number of overseas companies. Louise was appointed Supervisor in 2004 and accepted the role of Audit and Accounts Manager in July 2006. Louise also has a key role ensuring that Thomas Coombs retain their high standards of technical compliance as set by the UK 200 Group at their annual compliance visits.

Louise continues to be a popular choice with our clients who rely upon her guidance and advice, thus enabling her to develop and maintain successful and enjoyable working relationships.

John Brooks – Supervisor

John joined the firm straight from school and has worked for us for over 35 years. His experience is mainly in accounts preparation for small companies, partnerships and sole traders. He has been known to frequent a number of working men’s clubs but only on a professional basis.

John likes to spend his spare time with his wife, Andrea, and his children, Richard and Sarah. He says his children are older than a lot of the staff he works with!

Paul Bennett ACA – Supervisor

Paul joined the practice in 2006 after graduating with a first class honours degree in Economics; and qualified as a chartered accountant in August 2009. Following a year spent as an Audit Senior he was appointed Audit Supervisor in July 2010.

Paul looks after a broad range of audit clients from medium sized groups of companies, overseas owned UK companies and small owner managed businesses. In addition to supervising audits Paul has several management accounts roles which range from manufacturing to retail clients.

Outside of work Paul is a long suffering season ticket holder at Bradford City F.C. and tries to follow them home and away whenever he can.
